NIRSA 2023 PIttsburgh

Honoring Our History

NIRSA will be convening on the western Pennsylvania ancestral land of a wide variety of indigenous people. The Haudenosaunee were the more recent historical indigenous peoples (which consisted primarily of the Senecas) who welcomed the non-Iroquoian Lenapi from the Philadelphia region and the non-Iroquoian Shawnees from West Virginia and Ohio onto the land on which NIRSA will be hosting the 2023 NIRSA Annual Conference. NIRSA would like to acknowledge the Senecas and pay our respects to their ancestors and their descendants who continue to have cultural and spiritual connections to this land. We recognize their valuable contributions to our community and to the global society.
